Newsday, Aug 10th

If Francisco Nuñez gets his way, composers will no longer be inclined to allow children's choral music to languish while they focus on writing instrumental repertoire. Starting today his group, the Young People's Chorus of New York City, presents "Transient Glory," a five-day choral symposium and chamber music festival which aims to advance the art of children's choirs and encourage composers to write for them...read more

New York Times, Aug 5th

Writing music for children's choir doesn't have the cachet of, say, writing for a symphony orchestra. But Francisco J. Nunez, founder of the Young People's Chorus of New York City, has set out to chang that by commissioning major composers - Ned Rorem, David Del Tredici, Judith Weir, Bright Sheng - to write works for his ensemble. The project, started in 2001, has become an energetic endeavor, with the collaboration of a number of music publishers. This week the group is presenting a symposium with open master classes by day and concerts every evening at 7:30 from Wednesday through Aug. 13. Frederick Loewe Theater, New York University, 35 West Fourth Street, Greenwich Village; (212) 289-7779; $25 for all four concerts, beginning Wednesday.

New York Times, Aug 7th

To attract more talent to the field of choral music, Francisco J. Nunez, founder of the Young People's Chorus of New York City, began commissioning composers like Ned Rorem, David Del Tredici and Michael Torke to write for his young singers. His project, called "Transient Glory," has turned into a large-scale venture with different music publishers collaborating under one rubric to make the pieces available to other choruses. This week, the Young People's Chorus is playing host to a four-day symposium for choral directors and singers, with public master classes by day and concerts every evening. Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30pm, Frederick Loewe Theater of New York University, 35 West Fourth Street, Greenwich Village, (212) 289-7779.
