Calendar of Events 2011-2012
Francisco J. Núńez founded the Young People's Chorus of New York City 23 years ago to bring children of all races, religions, and economic backgrounds together through the study and performance of music. While always mindful of this mission, he has brought the chorus to an exceedingly high artistic level. The 2011-12 season is an especially rewarding one for the chorus with invitations to sing around the world and collaborations with major music institutions, including American Composers Orchestra, Bang on a Can, Carnegie Hall, and the San Francisco Symphony. YPC is being recognized as an important part of the new music community and as a model and inspiration to an underdeveloped country. The following are just some highlights of the season:

To culminate Hispanic Heritage Month, the Young People’s Chorus of New York City will sing a program of latino favorites including salsa and merengue with audience participation prior to their trip to the Dominican Republic.

The YPC Concert Chorus and Cantare conducted by Francisco J. National Theater in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
By invitation of Ambassador José Santana and before an audience including the President and First Lady of the Dominican Republic, YPC will headline Oye Mi Voz, a concert at Santo Domingo's National Theater, as part of a visit of the Dominican Republic from October 26 to 30. YPC is touring and performing as an inspirational model of diversity and artistic excellence for the country’s people. Guest artists at the October 27 National Theater concert include Paquito D’Rivera and the newly formed El Capotillo Chorus, the first of five choruses to be established from different economic areas of the country as part of a national children’s choral program created with help from YPC, the first step in building a community of diverse economic backgrounds.

Miracle! New Hanukkah Opera for Children

YPC’s Prelude and Intermezzo divisions will give a workshop of Miracle!, a new 50-minute Hanukkah opera for children by composer Victoria Bond and librettist Susan L. Roth. Transient Glory Symposium - Young People's Chorus of New York City in Partnership with Carnegie Hall and in Association with Chorus America

For three days, eight conductor fellows plus associates and auditors from across the U.S. will work one-on-one with composers, master teachers, and performers on new music written specifically for young voices as part of YPC’s groundbreaking Transient Glory commissioning series. Concerts at three major New York City venues hosted by WNYC’s John Schaefer will conclude each day’s activities. The programs will include the music being workshopped by Derek Bermel, John Corigliano, Douglas J. Cuomo, David Del Tredici, Michael Gordon, Paquito D’Rivera, Bright Sheng, and Joan Tower, as well as related chamber works and the premieres of one-minute encores written by most of the composers. The JACK Quartet are artists in residence.

YPC's Annual Fundraising Gala

YPC will be joined by a roster of exciting guest artists for its annual gala, a showcase of the incredible showmanship, style, and musical gifts on display by all divisions of the chorus in the Rose Theater of Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, where YPC is in residence. The concert is followed by a lavish dinner in the Allen Room, where a view of the city provides a spectacular backdrop to the occasion. This year’s gala honorees are Michael C. Slocum of Capital One receiving YPC’s Corporate Award and Mrs. Barbara Adler Katzander, Patron of the Arts, receiving its Humanitarian Award.

Adolf Fredrik Children's Choral Festival

Satellite Schools Concert

All divisions will sing a program ranging from jazz and Broadway show tunes to classical and the contemporary sounds of today’s leading composers. This is also a bittersweet occasion, when YPC bids farewell and good wishes to the choristers graduating from YPC and going off to college.

World Choral Summit

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City has been invited by the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM) as the only chorus to represent North America in the World Choral Summit in Beijing, China, in July 2012. The theme of this global summit is Voices in Harmony. The other choruses taking part are the Vokalna Akademia Kjubljana of Slovenia from Europe; Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University from Africa; National Youth Choir of Argentina from South America, and Gonwana Voices from Australia.

Llangollen International Eisteddfod

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City™ has been accepted to compete in the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in Wales this summer. Each July, more than 4,000 musicians, singers, and dancers from around the globe travel to Llangollen, Wales, to perform at one of the world's most colorful festivals with its unique spirit of peace and goodwill. Choristers will perform in evening concerts in addition to competing in three different categories.

14-city Japan Tour Presented by Min-On Concert Association
Japan
YPC has been invited to return to Japan this summer by the Min-On Concert Association. This second tour of 14 new Japanese cities over the course of three weeks in summer 2010 is a follow up to the extraordinarily successful 2009, 18-city summer tour across Japan. Choristers will perform in concert halls across the country of Japan, and the tour will enable them to grow as professional young artists, and bring home new experiences and memories that change the way they view the world.

The September Concert with the New York Choral Society

The September Concert is a celebration of peace and humanity through music which began in 2002 as a small, local grassroots effort. This has steadily evolved to be an event of global proportion with a mission to promote global peace. From Cap Haitïen to Ukraine and Tokyo, there are now over 200 concerts across the world. YPC will perform in this year's 9th Annual September Concert in what has become a tradition with the Choir of St. Patrick's Cathedral and the New York Choral Society.

Performance with the Kronos Quartet

The Young People's Chorus of New York City™will perform two works with the Kronos Quartet at New York's famed (le) Poisson Rouge in the heart of Greenwich Village. Lord & Taylor's The Gift of Sharing Event

Young People’s Chorus of New York City™ will perform the world premiere of “Share the Joy” at The Gift of Sharing unveiling of Lord & Taylor’s 2010 holiday windows on Fifth Avenue Monday, November 15, and will be premiering the work simultaneously with more than 40 other choruses in Lord & Taylor stores across nine states.
Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth, currently starring in Broadway’s “Promises, Promises,” will join YPC and perform a song from her new album, A Lovely Way to Spend Christmas. YPC and Ms. Chenoweth will join the Fifth Avenue revelers in singing “Let it Snow” to close the program, and we hear that the forecast is calling for snow at Lord & Taylor’s flagship store that day!

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City™ will perform in the 84th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®, joining the multi-talented and Tony-nominated Ann Hampton Callaway in the television premiere performance of “Yes Virginia, there’s a Santa Claus” atop the Winter Wonderland in Central Park float. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade® will be broadcast live in front of NBC-TV's national audience on November 25, 2010 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
“Yes Virginia, there’s a Santa Claus” is a new arrangement written by Emmy-nominated composer Wesley Whatley with lyrics by Macy’s Creative Director and Emmy-nominated lyricist William Schermerhorn. “Yes Virginia, there’s a Santa Clause” is based on the well-known 1897 editorial from The Sun by Francis Pharcellus Church.

Celebrating 10 Years of Radical New Music for Daring Young Minds

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City™ is celebrating 10 Years of Radical New Music for Daring Young Minds with Transient Glory® X, a concert which includes a world premiere by Michael Harrison and Transient Glory® favorites from over the last ten years of the groundbreaking commissioning program. The concert will feature music from John Corigliano, Paquito D'Rivera, David Del Tredici, Michael Harrison, Meredith Monk and Michael Torke. Hosted by John Schaefer of Soundcheck on WNYC, New York Public Radio.
YPC's Transient Glory® concert series was created in 2001 to generate recognition among today's composers of the important instrument that is a child's voice during that fleeting period when it reveals a particular innocence and poignancy. The YPC has commissioned more than 50 pieces of music from a Who's Who of today's most respected contemporary composers. The Transient Glory® concerts have since expanded to include workshops, publications, two recordings and recognition of the YPC as a groundbreaker in increasing the repertoire of children's chorus while spotlighting the diversity of contemporary music.

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City™ will shine the spotlight on the children who participate in the YPC Satellite Chorus Program™ in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, and Queens in this free concert to be held at the 92nd Street Y. Over 700 singers will perform in, Sing Together Children, the 8th Annual Satellite Schools Concert which culminates each chorus' hard work during the school year. The choruses will each sing their own selections before joining together in YPC's signature song, "Give Us Hope."

YPC returns to Sociedad Coral Latinoamericana's Festival for the second year in a row in Washington Heights at Santa Rosa de Lima Parish. The Choral Society of Latin America is in its fourth year of their annual choral festival, which features choruses from around New York City in this exciting performance.

Bang on a Can Marathon

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City™ returns again this summer to Bang on a Can's annual Marathon in New York City. Composers Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julie Wolfe created the first Bang on a Can Marathon concert in 1987, and the Marathon is 12 hours of uninterrupted live music. The Bang on a Can Marathon has become one of the most diverse, most open and most exciting music events in the world, and YPC is thrilled to return this June.

Melodia! South American Music Festival

YPC will travel to South America for the "Melodia!" South American Music Festival this summer, performing throughout Brazil and Argentina. This festival is conducted by YPC Founder and Artistic Director Francisco J. Núñez, and will include rehearsals and concerts all over Argentina and Brazil, as well as opportunities to sight-see and experience the culture of these amazing countries. YPC will sing alone and as part of a mass choir in concerts which will take place at the famous Candelária Church, La Plata Cathedral and Luján Metropolis with full orchestra.

Melodia! South American Music Festival

YPC will sing alone and as part of a mass choir in concerts which will take place at the famous Candelária Church, La Plata Cathedral and Luján Metropolis with full orchestra.
